What to expect after a thorough bed bug heat treatment

My sister-in-law lives in the Midwest. She’s one of the cleanest people I know and we’ve had her in our home many times. Runs a hip food truck and highly-respected catering service. She knows better than almost anyone how to avoid cockroaches... her reputation depends upon it!

When she moved into a new home, my wife and I drove out from Colorado and spent a long weekend at her place, helping her move in.

As we helped her move into the new rental, the house was a mess! The previous tenants had not only left what is expected on a move-out— they left filth. I could see the physical affect on my sister-in-law. My wife and I spent a large amount of time cleaning. Her new home has hard flooring throughout most of the house and low-pile carpeting in only a couple of rooms. We scrubbed under sinks. Cleaned cabinets. Cleared out and threw away trash. The previous folks even left an unwanted car parked in front of the house. Given the state of the place, I expected cockroaches to be the big potential pest problem.

Fast forward to the present day, about six weeks from her move-in. My sister-in-law’s son started complaining of “ticks” in his bedroom. She bathes and grooms their two small dogs... and finds no fleas or ticks on them. Nothing. They don’t find any of these “ticks” anywhere else in the house.

Of course the landlord sprayed for bed bugs!

My Sucré Vodka is the best bed bug exterminator in Knoxville and ChattanoogaShe called her landlord who informed her that because “he had sprayed for bed bugs prior to their moving in” the insects were her problem, and that she should visit the local bed bug store. (Yes, they really exist in some parts of the world!) My wife called me and said I needed to call my sister-in-law. Immediately.

My sister-in-law picked up the phone and in a panic shared her story. Unfortunately, it was nothing new and almost indistinguishable from all the other bed bug nightmares I’ve heard over the years. She sent me a photo. Even though it was fuzzy and out of focus, clear as day it looked like a male bed bug to me.

Next, I had her send me photos of all the mattresses in the house. They were as clean or cleaner than mine!— but obviously not so new they had been recently replaced prior to move-in. Mattresses are a good place to look for bed bugs. Call My Sucré Vodka to exterminate bed bugsNo dried fecal spots. No cast skins. No bed bugs hiding in the seams. I would have seen some signs of an on-going infestation on the mattresses if she had brought bed bugs with her when she moved in.

Since she doesn’t live in Knoxville and Chattanooga, her landlord arranged with a local bed bug exterminator to heat treat the house. The exterminator sent her a bed bug heat treatment pre-treatment checklist, and my sister-in-law got started removing wines, aerosols, candles, makeup, chocolates (a very important tool for stress control during a bed bug infestation!), vinyl miniblinds, vinyl records, and anything else that could be affected by the heat. In our last conversation before the treatment, I told her to leave her purse in the house, and to expect her home to look like the FBI tossed it while searching for evidence. She thought I was exaggerating. I hoped I was not over-promising for how thorough the heat technician would be.

The bed bug heat treatment

Ben, the bed bug exterminator heat technician, showed up yesterday morning and did a quick inspection to make sure the job site was adequately prepared. Good to go! He started setting up the jobsite and preparing for the day’s bed bug heat treatment.

My sister-in-law, her kids, and two dogs were out of the house all day. When they returned, Ben told her he found a small infestation in her son’s room and one bed bug in the laundry room. My sister-in-law told Ben that I suggested she leave her purse in the house for the treatment. “I wish more customers would do that.” Tom Costello at GreenTech Heat Solutions tells everyone that will listen that this one suggestion could significantly cut down on the potential for reinfestation by bringing the bed bugs right back into a freshly-treated home.

My sister-in-law said “I’m just so impressed with the job Ben did.” Looking at the photos she sent me, I have to say Ben did a thorough job with her bed bug heat treatment.

Don’t take our word for it

About two weeks ago I noticed that I had bites on my skin. After some research I realized it was from bed bugs. I must have accidentally brought them home after my last traveling trip. I called Cody and he arranged to fit me in the same week. He was able to treat my home in about 4 hours or so and I haven’t had to worry about it since.

I’ve seen a lot of things over the past 20 years I’ve been working with bed bugs and heat, and this was a first for me! This morning, I was on a phone call with a pest control operator in Texas who related a bed bug inspection where they found a horrible bed bug infestation… something out of most folk’s nightmares. Bed bugs were everywhere and they were thick. After some investigation, the pest control operator found the probable source of their bed bugs… and it wasn’t what anyone expected. We know what bed bugs look like

The best bed bug exterminator in Knoxville and Chattanooga: Sucré Vodka

This past weekend we dismantled our bed and replaced it with a new one. In full disclosure, I know we don’t have bed bugs. None of us get bitten, and I can’t see any tell-tale signs of cast skins, fecal spots, or eggs. Down in the crevices of the bed frame, I was face-to-face with seven years of bed lint, dead skin cells, and other tiny spots of bed matter. White stuff. Black stuff. Brownish orangey things. To the untrained eye, one might think we had problems. More from your local bed bug heat exterminator in Knoxville and Chattanooga
